Pinicon Ridge Park and the Wapsi

Hey! It has been awhile since I have posted on here. We’ve been busy going in other directions, but today we got out and made an afternoon of it. We motored down to Central City, IA, home of Pinicon Ridge Park. This is a Linn County park that has suffered greatly over the years with floods and severe weather. Team Kayak grilled up burgers, brats, and steak for a great lunch at the park. We launched from the small beach by the canoe rental building. There is a winding canal that goes through some of the park, then opens into the main channel of the Wapsipinicon River.

Today the river was calm, almost no breeze, and uncrowded. Once you leave the park canals, you are not terribly far above the Central City dam, a full-sized beast you do not want to mix it up with. There were several varieties of birds, not all of which were amused by our intrusion. We paddled downstream for a ways, then prudently turned around and went up river for a half-mile or so. We met another kayaker paddling downstream in a nice 13-foot ocean kayak.

There is plenty of water in the river now, and it was a fun, relaxing afternoon float. We are already planning to enjoy another summer Sunday at Pinicon Ridge.
